President Trump recently has allowed for 80,000 metric tons of lean beef trimmings from Argentina to help offset the cost of beef in the United States which has drawn both criticism and support all over the country.
President Trump recently posted to Truth Social, “As we work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers, for the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff. We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices. This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again”.
That is the administration’s case. A lot of ranchers are not sold on it.
Affordability is on everyone’s mind this upcoming midterm election. Everything from gas, diesel, groceries have all skyrocketed and people feel it.
Its stated via, The White House: “the United States herd has fallen to its lowest level in 75 years” (https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2026/09/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-supports-americas-ranchers/). It may be easy to import beef from other countries to ease the sticker price but it doesn’t fix the long term ramification.
I recently interviewed an Oklahoma rancher who knows a thing or two about this issue. Stephanie Hodges of Stigler, runs a 320 acre cow-calf operation. The costs of keeping it going is real.
She stated, “Diesel and feed (about $290 a ton) keep climbing and I’m lucky to see a profit”. Hodges feels the effects of decisions made in DC. She and other producers and residents, I spoke with believe the Argentina imports and other countries hurt American cattlemen and producers. “Stigler is not happy with Trump’s beef initiative”.
She said that larger chains are taking advantage of the moment, which is why people should only by local not through big grocery stores. This is a short term solution to a long term problem. Americans wants American beef not imported beef.
Do not get me wrong, I support President Trump, but I have disagreements with this specific issue. Right now, Trump and his administration is taking steps to stop the bleeding. The first order is removing the grey and Mexican grey wolves off the endangered species list allowing farmers to protect their herd. Then the second order is to allow farmers to process their own meat to sell on the market. This will be an interesting fight and needs to be addressed before the midterm.
